Take your content global without losing its look. Global Digital DTP typesets, formats, and localizes your documents in 100+ languages, so every market sees the same polished, on-brand design.
A translation is only half the job. Once the text changes, the layout has to change with it: line lengths shift, fonts need to support new scripts, and reading direction can flip entirely. Our multilingual typesetting team handles that work for books, manuals, brochures, reports, and marketing collateral, so each language edition looks as precise as the original.
We work in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, QuarkXPress, Word, and PDF. Whether you send editable source files or only a PDF, you receive print-ready files that meet international publishing standards.
What Is Multilingual Typesetting?
Multilingual typesetting (also called multilingual DTP) is the process of placing translated text into a document and adjusting the design so it reads naturally and looks professional in the target language. It goes well beyond pasting text into a layout. It includes:
- Text expansion and contraction: German, Russian, and French often run 20-35% longer than English, while Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are usually shorter. Pages, tables, and captions need to be reflowed to fit.
- Script-specific typography: Each writing system has its own rules for line breaking, hyphenation, punctuation, spacing, and font selection.
- Right-to-left (RTL) layouts: Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Urdu require mirrored page structures, reversed table columns, and correct handling of mixed-direction text such as numbers and Latin brand names.
- Font compatibility: The fonts in your original design may not include the glyphs needed for other languages. We select matching typefaces that preserve your brand’s look.
- Localized elements: Dates, units, currencies, page numbering, and call-outs often need adapting alongside the text.
Skipping these steps leads to broken characters, awkward line breaks, overflowing text, and layouts that feel unprofessional to local readers.
Multilingual Typesetting With Source Files
Send us your original InDesign, Illustrator, QuarkXPress, Word, or other editable files, and we place the translated text straight into your approved design.
Why it works well
- Consistent design: Page flow, master pages, stylesheets, and alignments carry over exactly as you approved them.
- Faster turnaround: We adapt your file instead of rebuilding it, so there’s less guesswork and fewer revisions.
- Lower cost on large projects: No time spent recreating layouts or reverse-engineering PDFs.
- Brand integrity: Fonts, corporate colors, logos, and formatting stay intact, so every edition matches the original.
- Scalable for future languages: Once the template is adapted, adding a new language is far quicker.
What we do
- Prepare the file: We import your source files into our production environment and check fonts, styles, margins, and graphic links. Missing fonts and broken links are flagged before work begins.
- Adapt the layout: We adjust for text expansion or contraction. German and Russian often run longer, while Chinese and Arabic may need different typesetting.
- Insert translations: We place the translated text while keeping or adapting inline graphics, captions, tables, footnotes, and callouts.
- Check quality: We review kerning, line spacing, hyphenation, RTL layouts (Arabic, Hebrew), and special character sets such as Asian and Cyrillic scripts.
- Deliver: You receive print-ready output (PDF/X or your required format), plus the adapted source file if you want it for future use.
- Archive: We keep version control and project archives, so adding languages or updates later is simple.
Choose this option if you
- Already have a well-designed edition with editable files.
- Want translated versions that look identical, or nearly so, to the original.
- Plan to publish in more languages over time and want a reusable template.
- Need typographic adjustments for RTL layouts, Asian fonts, or complex scripts.
Multilingual Typesetting Without Source Files
No editable files? If all you have is a PDF, a printed copy, or a scan, we can still deliver a complete multilingual version.
How it works
- Analyze: We review your non-editable files for page size, margins, columns, typography, graphics, image placement, and special symbols.
- Rebuild: We recreate the design as a working template in Adobe InDesign (or another DTP tool), including master pages, styles, headers, footers, and numbering.
- Typeset: We import the translated text and adjust the layout for expansion or contraction, including special scripts, RTL languages, and vertical text where needed.
- Handle graphics: For text embedded in images, we extract and replace it or rebuild the graphic with an editable text layer.
- Check quality: We review layout, typography, text flow, pagination, links, image resolution, and export settings (PDF/X or other).
- Deliver: You receive a print-ready PDF, plus the rebuilt template as an optional add-on.
Choose this option if
- Your original files are lost, corrupted, or were never provided.
- You have only a PDF or printed edition and don’t want to redesign from scratch.
- You want high-quality results and can accept minor layout differences from the original.
- You’re publishing one-off or low-volume languages and want a cost-effective solution.

| Turnaround | Faster | Longer, as the layout is rebuilt first |
| Best for | Ongoing, multi-language projects | One-off or low-volume projects |
| Reusable template | Included in your files | Optional add-on |

Our Quality Assurance Process
Every project goes through layout and linguistic-aware checks before delivery:
- Typography review (kerning, leading, hyphenation, widows and orphans)
- Text overflow and pagination checks
- Font embedding and glyph coverage verification
- RTL and mixed-direction text review
- Link, cross-reference, and table of contents validation
- Image resolution and color checks
- Final export checks against your print specs
We also recommend a final review by a native-language reader. We’re happy to coordinate that step, or work from corrections your in-country reviewers provide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Multilingual Typesetting Services: With or Without Source Files
Do I need to provide source files?
No. We can work from editable source files or from a PDF, scan, or printed copy. Source files are faster and more cost-effective for large or ongoing projects.
Can you work with text I’ve already translated?
Yes. Send us the translated text, and we’ll place it into the layout. If you also need translation, let us know and we can discuss options.
What happens if the translated text doesn’t fit the original layout?
We adjust font size, spacing, and layout within your brand guidelines, and flag cases where the text may need editing to fit.
Can you typeset RTL languages like Arabic and Hebrew?
Yes. We mirror layouts, reverse tables and navigation, and handle numbers and embedded Latin text correctly.
What if my images contain text?
We extract and replace the text, or recreate the graphic with an editable text layer, so it can be localized properly.
Will I get the editable files back?
Yes, if you’d like them. We can deliver the adapted source files along with the print-ready PDF.
How do I get a quote?
Send us your files, target languages, and deliverables. We’ll review them and respond with cost and timeline, and we offer a free test project.
Get Started
- Request a free quote or test project: Send your source files or PDF and we’ll estimate cost and timeline.
